Preheat oven to 350ºF.

Grease and flour a 12 cup muffin tin.

Place the 1/3 cup brown sugar in a small separate bowl. Add 1/2 teaspoon of liquid smoke and stir to combine. Set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and, salt. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, olive oil, egg, brown sugar, vanilla and remaining teaspoon of liquid smoke.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until the batter comes together. Stir in the chocolate chips.

Divide the batter evenly among the 12 cups in the prepared muffin tin.

Sprinkle the smoked sugar on top.

Bake for 15 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean.

Transfer to a wire rack, to cool. Lovely if served slightly warm.
