Ingredients

For the doughnuts:

  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup water 105-115 degrees
  • 1-1/2 cups lukewarm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 T vanilla
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • vegetable oil for frying

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup chocolate wine sauce*
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter

Instructions

Make the doughnuts:

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in the bowl of your stand mixer.
  2. Add milk, sugar, salt, eggs, butter, vanilla, and 2 cups of flour.
  3. Beat on low for 30 seconds with the paddle attachment, scraping the bowl if needed.
  4. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally.
  5. Stir in remaining flour until smooth.
  6. Cover and let rise until doubled, about an hour.
  7. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll it 1/2-inch thick.
  8. Cut with a floured doughnut cutter.
  9. Cover and let rise again until doubled in size, 30-40 minutes.
  10. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer to 350 degrees F and fry until golden brown, about 30 seconds on each side.
  11. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels for a minute.

Make the glaze:

  1. Place everything in a saucepan and whisk over a low heat until smooth.
  2. Dip the doughnuts into the glaze and set them on cooling racks over paper-lined baking sheets.
