Chocolate Wine Glazed Doughnuts

Chocolate Wine Glazed Doughnuts

Recently, I found myself in Barryville, NY, for an art opening. A friend pulled me away from the exhibit to introduce me to his friends’ lovely shop around the corner called Region General Store. A wonderful concept, as all items in the store are local and regionally sourced. After a great browsing experience, I snatched up this jar of lovely chocolate wine sauce. Why do all roads seem to lead back to baking? Chocolate Wine Glazed Doughnuts are the result.

Chocolate Wine Sauce

My original intention was to stash the jar away for a future macaron filling. However,  I saw this bread and chocolate challenge for Bread Baking Day hosted by Lisa over at Parsley, Sage, Sweet. Then I knew I had found my use for this delicious sauce. Honestly, doughnuts have been on my mind as I haven’t made them in months. So this is a good excuse to break out the doughnut cutter and go to work on these Chocolate Wine Glazed Doughnuts

I know not everyone has access to this jar of chocolate wine sauce. So here is a recipe for making your own.

General Tips for Making Homemade Doughnuts

Making homemade doughnuts, like these Chocolate Wine Glazed Doughnuts, may sound like a messy science experiment gone sweet. However, with a few tips and tricks, you’ll be frying up golden rings of joy in no time. From the perfect rise to the ideal glaze, doughnut success depends on patience, timing, and a touch of playful creativity. And because some of us love clear guidance, here are some easy-to-follow tips that will keep your doughnuts fluffy, flavorful, and fabulous.

Cutting out doughnuts

Tips and Tricks for Making Doughnuts

  • First, let the dough rest. Resting allows the gluten to relax and helps the doughnuts puff up like little pillows.
  • Next, mind the oil temperature. Too hot and they’ll burn outside while staying raw inside; too cold and they’ll soak up oil like sponges. Aim for about 175°C (350°F).
  • Then, cut evenly. Uniform shapes ensure even cooking—no one wants a lopsided doughnut with an identity crisis.
  • After that, avoid overcrowding the fryer. Give each doughnut space to dance; crowding lowers the oil temperature and causes soggy sadness.
  • Finally, glaze while warm. Because a warm doughnut grabs onto glaze like best friends at a party, creating that irresistible shiny finish.

With these simple strategies, your kitchen transforms into a mini bakery where the smell of fresh doughnuts could make even neighbors “accidentally” stop by.

These Chocolate Wine Glazed Doughnuts are for the adult crowd. Or for those grown up enough to stay up late as an after-dinner dessert. Oh. And of course I didn’t forget the munchkins.

  • 1-1/2 cups lukewarm milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1 T vanilla
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • vegetable oil for frying

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup chocolate wine sauce*
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in the bowl of your stand mixer.
  2. Add milk, sugar, salt, eggs, butter, vanilla, and 2 cups of flour.
  3. Beat on low for 30 seconds with the paddle attachment, scraping the bowl if needed.
  4. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally.
  5. Stir in remaining flour until smooth.
  6. Cover and let rise until doubled, about an hour.
  7. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll it 1/2-inch thick.
  8. Cut with a floured doughnut cutter.
  9. Cover and let rise again until doubled in size, 30-40 minutes.
  10. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer to 350 degrees F and fry until golden brown, about 30 seconds on each side.
  11. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels for a minute.

Make the glaze:

  1. Place everything in a saucepan and whisk over a low heat until smooth.
  2. Dip the doughnuts into the glaze and set them on cooling racks over paper-lined baking sheets.
