One of my dearest friends got married yesterday in Los Olivos, CA. I am so thrilled for her and her new husband. It was a small, beautiful ceremony in a private garden. Each of us were asked to read something.
Since the bride and groom are Australian and South African respectively, we had people far and wide joining the ceremony by Skype. Even Dr. B checked in from Baghdad.
I wanted to bring something special with me and I think my idea was A+.
Unfortunately, the execution of the idea fell short of a passing grade. I made one huge cookie decorating mistake.
The idea was to make big colorful iced sugar cookies and use an edible marker to write love poem quotes on them from famous poets. After completing them, I wanted to embellish them further (my compulsion in life) so I brushed disco dust on them.
The alcohol I used to apply the disco dust smeared the writing. I should have disco dusted first, then written on the cookies.
Duh.
This is what happens when I don’t thoroughly think out the final design of the cookie. Making it up as I go along causes goofs and I do this more often than I will admit.
The worst part was I had no time to redo them which I would have. Gladly.
The wedding however, went off without a hitch. And as smeared and wonky as these cookies turned out, I still schlepped them across the country where they were still loved, appreciated and enjoyed by all.
That’s what friends are for.
For the Cookies:
I used THIS RECIPE for Chocolate Sugar Cookies from the Joy of Baking.
The only change I made was to add two tablespoons of Godiva Chocolate Liqueur.
For the icing:
I used Sweet Sugarbelle’s Top Secret Royal Icing. Recipe HERE. I did not flavor the icing because the cookies were flavorful enough.
The colors I used to tint the icing were Wilton’s gel leaf green, violet and sky blue. I left the white icing alone. Usually I tint it white white.

Love the cookies but can we have a picture of the happy bride and groom?
Hi Lora, I tried the cookies pre-love poems and they were awesome. All your baking is sublime, not too sweet, but sweet enough to put you into that"sugar haze" we all love and crave. I am in NYC until March 1. Cancelled my Bombay plans, so hope we can get together again. xoxoxoxo
