#1 Henri Willig’s  The Story of Edam Cheese Museum and Store

Edam - Cheese Canals & Charm The story of Cheese Edam Netherlands

No cheese lover should miss Henri Willig’s The Story of Cheese experience, a flavorful journey into Dutch tradition. Cheese is not just food—it’s history on a plate. Famous worldwide for its mild, nutty Edam cheese, this fun and interactive museum tells a story that stretches back to the Middle Ages, when Edam’s round, wax-coated wheels were shipped across Europe as durable, long-lasting treasures.

Visitors today step into this flavorful past by experiencing the timeless story of how this little town became a big name in global food history. Incidentally, the stars of the Edam cheese story are the farmers’ wives. Because they were the ones who forged the process by hand. This interactive attraction combines history, craftsmanship, and—of course—tastings of world-famous Edam cheese.

#2 St. Nicholas Church (Grote Kerk)

Edam - Cheese Canals & Charm St. Nicholas Church Edam Netherlands
St. Nicholas Church (Grote Kerk) rises with all the grandeur you’d expect from a 15th-century masterpiece—and just a touch of Dutch practicality. It is one of the largest churches in the region, built when Edam’s cheese and trade fortunes were at their ripest. Consequently, step inside and you’ll be greeted by soaring Gothic arches and glorious stained-glass windows. These beauties once doubled as a medieval Instagram feed for wealthy merchants eager to show off their generosity. The intricate wooden ceiling stretches above, and the peaceful atmosphere invites quiet reflection and wide-eyed wonder. So the entrance is free. However, there is a fee to climb the tower.

Beneath its floor rests Geertje Dircx. Well, maybe. Because no one is sure it is her actual grave. Born in Edam, best known as Rembrandt’s mistress and perhaps one of the most unlucky girlfriends in Dutch history. Their romance started with passion but ended in scandal, lawsuits, and even time in a correctional house—proof that dating a genius painter wasn’t always glamorous. Honestly, the marker is modest, easy to overlook. However, there is a replica of one of Rembrandt’s paintings of her, which is surprisingly risque for the surroundings. Yet her story adds a human twist to this 15th-century masterpiece: love, betrayal, and drama, right alongside serene spiritual beauty.

Visiting St. Nicholas Church in Edam is like stepping into history with a splash of art-world gossip – proof that even in a town famous for cheese, there’s always room for a little scandal with your sightseeing.

#3 The Jewish Memorial and Cemetery

Jewish Cemetery Edam Netherlands

In Edam, Netherlands, the Jewish cemetery and memorial quietly preserve the memory of a community once central to the town’s life. Established in the 18th century, the cemetery holds centuries-old gravestones. These stand as enduring reminders of Jewish heritage in North Holland. At its heart is a striking bronze sculpture.  A pair of figures, one adult and one child, walk forward together. The artwork captures both resilience and loss. It symbolizes the families torn apart during the Holocaust and honors those who never returned.

Surrounded by greenery and Edam’s calm streets, the site is both solemn and peaceful. For travelers, the Jewish memorial and cemetery in Edam offers a moving encounter with history. It balances remembrance with the quiet dignity of art.

#4 The Cheese Weigh House (Kaaswaag)

Cheese Weight House Edam Netherlands

Edam – Cheese Canals & Charm – here is another portion of cheese: The Cheese Weigh House (Waag) proves that even wheels of cheese once needed to watch their figure. Built in the 18th century, this historic building was where traders officially weighed their prized Edam cheese before selling it across Europe. Today, visitors can step inside and see the original scales. Then marvel at how seriously the Dutch took their cheese business. Now imagine the drama of a few grams tipping the price.

The building now doubles as a museum. The Weigh House transforms every summer into a stage for one of the town’s most beloved traditions. On market days, costumed cheese carriers dash across the square with wooden barrows stacked high with golden wheels. The ritual isn’t just for show. These lively reenactments recreate how cheese was once weighed, inspected, and traded here in centuries past. Crowds gather to watch the weighing, bargaining, and bell-ringing, turning a simple transaction into pure Dutch theater.

Address: Jan Nieuwenhuizenplein 5 1135 WT Edam
