This month’s berry bakealong was a delicious combination of cake, meringue, berries and custard, all packed into one delicious torte.
When I first scanned the recipe. I thought, “Whoa. This is going to be a whole day affair. ” Not so. The layers come together quickly. Make the custard ahead of time to make it all go much quicker.
I used a combination of blackberries and raspberries since I had just created an almost similar dessert with strawberries (are berry layer desserts a current thing now?) I needed to switch up my berries.
The vanilla custard alone is luscious. You will have a hard time not eating it all on its own. totally worth it to save it for the torte though.
The layers have a cake base and a meringue top studded with almonds and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.
My layers did not seem to turn out as high as the ones pictured on the King Arthur Flour website but I was happy with the results.
A perfect dessert for Memorial or Labor Day picnics as well as a Fourth of July barbecue.
It is a stunner on any dessert table and the taste matches the looks.
