Streusel Cherry Chocolate Popcorn

by Lora Wiley-Lennartz
So, am I the only one who eats the crumbs off a NY-style crumb cake or picks the streusel bits out of every dessert it covers? Does that make me a dessert freak?  Didn’t think so. Admit it. I know some of you do the same. It’s ok. We’re ok. Today I am spreading the struesel love. It is jumping off cakes and onto this Streusel Cherry Chocolate Popcorn.

Adding the cherry chocolate flavors seems a bit over the top. In retrospect, Nein!

By the way, I made my own popcorn. You can use a microwave bag to save time. Any chocolate or melts can be substituted as well.

Streusel Cherry Chocolate Popcorn

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup unpopped popcorn
  • vegetable oil for coating the pot
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup cherry chips
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate
  • Extra butter for buttering popcorn
Directions:
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Make the streusel:
  • In a bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, and butter with a wooden spoon until it forms pea-sized chunks.
  • Transfer the mixture to a shallow baking dish and put it in the oven for 15 minutes.
  • Take it out and let it cool.
  • Make the popcorn:
  • Coat a large pot with oil and place an unpopped kernel in the pot.
  • Melt the butter for coating the popcorn.
  • When the kernel pops, pour in the popcorn, cover the pot, and shake it back and forth until the popping stops.
  •  Place popcorn in a large bowl and toss with melted butter.
  • Spread the popcorn out on the baking sheet.
  • Melt the cherry chips and chocolate together over a double boiler or in a microwave.
  • Drizzle the mixture over the popcorn.
  • Sprinkle the streusel over the popcorn/chocolate mix and mix loosely.
  • When the chocolate is dry, break up the popcorn, place it in a bowl, and serve.

I agree with The Vanilla Bean Baker – you always have such unique ideas! Why not combine two delicious treats?! I would definitely be buying this over every other popcorn if it were in a cinema!

Streusel and popcorn?! I must try it! We got rid of our microwave 2 years ago and learned how fun it is to make popcorn on the stove.
