Valentine’s Heart Candy Bark

Valentine's Candy Bark
Making candy bark for a holiday is always a no-brainer. There was a sale on candy melts a while back and I, ahem, might have overdone it a little. Now, they are spilling out of my cabinets everywhere. Over-estimating one’s candy melt use by about 1000000 bags is not a good look. I had to free up space in my kitchen. Consequently, here is a recipe for Valentine’s Heart Candy Bark.
Valentine's Heart Candy Bark

For this treat, swirl together a half bag each of red and pink vanilla-flavored melts. In my case, that’s one less bag that can hit me on the head when I open the cabinet door. The vanilla flavor in these candy melts is essential as these are not tinted chocolate chips.

Grease a bunch of heart cookie cutters, pour in the swirled melts, and add some store-bought Valentine’s candy. Also, I added leftover homemade royal icing ribbon roses. When cooled and solidified, each piece slips easily out of its cutter creating Valentine’s Heart Candy Bark.

It’s easy to get super creative with this recipe. For example, choose a color theme, all pink, all red, even or purple.  Another fun idea is to use Brach’s conversation hearts to spell out messages on the bark. How fun is that?

Wrap these up in little cellophane bags and tie them with ribbon. These make great Valentine’s Day gifts for friends, colleagues, teachers, etc. This Valentine’s Day-inspired candy bark is sweet and tasty studded with Valentine’s Day candy surprises.

Adapt this recipe for other holidays:

This recipe idea is not limited to Valentine’s Day. So here are some suggestions for making these for other holidays:
Easter – use bunny or egg-shaped cutters and a color palette of yellow, pink, blue, and green pastel-tinted melts. Add jelly beans and Easter-themed candy.
St. Patrick’s Day – Use a shamrock-shaped cutter. Then swirl together Kelly green and white melts.
Halloween – Use black and or orange with candy corn and candy eyes. So fun!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 bag of vanilla-flavored red candy melts
  • 1/2 bag of vanilla-flavored pink candy melts
  • Shortening for greasing cutters
  • 1 cup Valentine's candy variety

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Grease several (I used 8 medium-sized) cutters and place them on a baking sheet.
  3. In a heatproof bowl, place the red melts on one side and the pink on the other.
  4. Microwave the melts 30 seconds at a time, and stir each side separately until both sides are melted.
  5. If the consistency is not thin enough for pouring add a dab of shortening to each side and mix in.
  6. When both sides are equally melted, gently swirl them together. Do not overmix or you will lose the swirl effect.
  7. Use a rubber spatula to fill each cutter about halfway. Work with 2-3 cutters at a time.
  8. Place candy on top, pressing them into the mixture.
  9. Let cool and harden completely, remove from cutters, and serve.
