Antwerp Belgium

Antwerp, Belgium, is a vibrant and historically rich city that offers a unique blend of old-world charm and modern dynamism. Located in the Flanders region of Belgium, it is a city with a rich history spanning centuries. Admiring Antwerp’s Ageless Gems is effortless. There is so much to see.

Here are four key highlights from my last visit to Antwerp:

1 – The Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal)

Admiring Antwerp's Ageless Gems Cathedral of Our Lady Antwerp

This church is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and an essential landmark in the city. The construction began in 1352 reaching completion in 1521.  The tallest spire reaches a height of 123 meters (404 feet), which makes it the tallest church in the Benelux region.

World Heritage Site: In recognition of its historical and cultural value, the cathedral was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

Rubens’ Masterpieces: The Cathedral of Our Lady houses several renowned paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, one of the greatest Baroque artists. Key works include:

  • “The Elevation of the Cross”: A dramatic triptych that captures the intensity and emotion of the crucifixion.
  • “The Descent from the Cross”: Another striking triptych that showcases Rubens’ skill in depicting human figures and expressions.

This Cathedral is a religious and architectural marvel, a true Gothic masterpiece. Also, it is a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage. Its towering spires, magnificent interior, and invaluable artworks make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Antwerp.

2 -Diamond District

The Diamond District in Antwerp, Belgium, is famous as the heart of the global diamond trade. This is the second “gem” in this Admiring Antwerp’s Ageless Gems post. This district is a bustling hub where, since the 15th century,  a significant portion of the world’s rough, polished, and industrial diamonds are traded.

Antwerp’s Diamond District handles approximately 84% of the world’s rough diamonds and 50% of the polished diamonds. Unfortunately, when I was there the DIVA museum was closed for renovation. However, wandering the streets and gawking at the window bling offers plenty of entertainment.

Kimberley Process: Antwerp adheres to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), which aims to prevent the trade in conflict diamonds. The KPCS ensures that diamonds traded in Antwerp are sourced ethically and responsibly.

Also, the Diamond District has a multicultural population, with a significant presence of Jewish, Indian, Armenian, and Lebanese communities. These communities play a vital role in the development and sustenance of the diamond trade in Antwerp.

This area is a unique and fascinating part of Antwerp. Its strict regulatory framework, rich multicultural heritage, and economic importance make it a vital and intriguing part of Antwerp’s identity.

3 – Plantin Moretus Museum

Admiring Antwerp's Ageless Gems Plantin-Moretus Museum in AntwerpThe Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, Belgium, is a remarkable institution. It is dedicated to the history of printing and the life and work of one of the most influential European printing families, the Plantin-Moretus family.  The museum complex includes the original printing workshop, the family’s private residence, and various outbuildings. The architecture is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles.

This former residence and printing establishment of Christophe Plantin, a prominent printer and publisher of the 16th century, and his successor, Jan Moretus. is fascinating. Plantin established the printing house in 1555. It quickly became one of the most important in Europe. furthermore, in 2005, the Plantin-Moretus Museum was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its historical and cultural significance.

In addition, there is an extensive collection of typefaces and matrices, showcasing the craftsmanship and variety of fonts as well as a vast collection of books and manuscripts.

The museum’s interior features period rooms with original furnishings, tapestries, and artwork. Paintings on display include likenesses of family members. Some are by renowned artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, a friend of the Moretus family.

The beautiful courtyard and garden offer a peaceful retreat for visitors.

4 – Antwerp Train Station

Antwerp Central Station, known as Antwerpen-Centraal, is one of the most impressive and architecturally significant train stations in the world.  The station was constructed between 1895 and 1905, under the direction of King Leopold II. It officially opened on August 11, 1905. The project was part of a larger plan to modernize Belgium’s rail network.

This station is a masterpiece of railway architecture, blending various architectural styles. The designer, Louis Delacenserie combined elements of Gothic Revival, Renaissance Revival, and Art Nouveau styles.

One of the most striking features of the station is its grand dome, which towers above the main waiting hall. The facade, made of stone has intricate detailing. This gives the station a palatial appearance. The large, arched windows allow natural light to flood the space, enhancing its majestic atmosphere.

Beyond its function as a transport hub, Antwerpen-Centraal is a cultural landmark, frequently featured in films, documentaries, and travel guides as one of the most beautiful train stations in the world.

DRINKS:

So when in Belgium…   Here are three drinks I enjoyed that are regional-specific.

elixir d'anvers

Elixir d’Anvers is a spirit blending anise, cinnamon, and saffron, among others. Surprisingly, its recipe has been unchanged for 160 years. It is made in Antwerp. Thought to aid digestion, in the 1920’s this elixir was also recommended for apathetic women, stressed-out men, and sluggish horses.

elixir d'anvers cocktails

Today it is a star ingredient in sexy cocktails. For example, we had it with tonic (recommended by our hotel bartender). Obviously, a bottle made its way home with me.

Full disclosure. I am not a beer drinker. However, I found these two varieties tasty and refreshing. Firstly,  Belgian Kriek is a fruity beer that mixes white beer and cherry juice. Additionally, it’s not too sweet. Secondly, Blanche De Manur Rosee is a beer flavored with raspberry juice. Also lovely.  BTW. These beers are an especially excellent pairing for french fries. Just sayin’.

Gins – We loved the selection of Belgium gins our hotel bartender recommended. Blind Tiger and Copperhead were two of our favorites.

HOTEL TIP:

Sapphire house Antwerp Belgium

We loved our stay at the gorgeous boutique Sapphire House. This is a Marriott property that is part of their Autograph Collection. The staff was incredible and the bartenders were fantastic and friendly. Additionally, the cocktails are excellent. We ate our last meal in Antwerp there and it was delicious. Highly recommend.
