The Surprisingly Star Ingredient:
First, let’s talk about the star ingredient: red beets. These vibrant veggies do more than just add color. They infuse the bread with a subtle, earthy sweetness that’s hard to resist. Plus, the marbled red appearance is simply stunning. Slice into it, and you’ll see what we mean. Perfect for the holidays, this bread will make your Thanksgiving, Christmas, or even Valentine’s Day table pop with festive color.
This rustic, hearty, crunchy bread uses shredded fresh beets for deep earthy flavor and dramatic bright red color.
I used a mixture of bread and whole wheat flour for this beet bread. However, it works just as well with the all-purpose variety. The recipe uses what Germans call a Gärkorb. This is a method of rising where the bread dough is floured and placed upside down in a bowl or basket for its final rise time. Speaking of rise time – this bread recipe has an especially long three-hour rise time. However, it is certainly worth the wait.
It’s not just a pretty face; it’s packed with whole wheat goodness. The combination of hearty whole wheat and sweet beets creates a unique flavor profile.
Further Amp up your Cheese or Charcuterie Board:
Need another reason to bake this beauty? It’s a showstopper on a charcuterie or cheese board. So slice it, cube it, or tear it into chunks. No matter how you serve it, this bread is sure to impress. The vibrant red marbling makes it a feast for the eyes, and its flavor pairs perfectly with cheeses, meats, and spreads.
