Morello Cherry Tequila Sour

by Lora Wiley-Lennartz
This Morello Cherry Tequila Sour is my second drink recipe in as many posts, and I have two good reasons. Firstly,  tomorrow is National Tequila Day. Secondly, I have a gorgeous bottle of reposado tequila sitting on my shelf for months. Consequently, Tequila Day is a perfect opportunity to break it out and mix up a delicious cocktail.

A few months ago, I attended a Viva XXXII tequila tasting event and sampled the brand’s Joven, Reposado, and Extra Añejo sipping varieties. The tequilas are well-priced and delicious. We were all impressed with the brand, and I vowed to make a cocktail to post here. So move over Rhubarb Mint Frosé, today’s the day, people.

Viva XXXII  Tequila

Viva XXXII  sent me a bottle of Reposado after the event. So here’s how the company describes the Reposado:

Tasting Notes: The aromas are agave-forward with vanilla. A hint of toasted nuts lends a crisp, buttery balance with a medium finish of vanilla and floral notes that create a well-rounded, refined and delicate taste.

Completely accurate. The reposado is perfect for sipping on its own. However, I had other plans. Therefore, on to the Morello Cherry Tequila Sour.

Morello Cherry Tequila Sour ingredients

In contemplating what to make with the beautiful reposado tequila, I wanted something sweet and sour. Two jars of Morello cherries have mysteriously appeared in my pantry. I may or may not remember putting them there myself. Morello is the name for a group of sour cherry varieties, so I dug a jar out to have some fun with the tequila.

Morello Cherries

This Morello Cherry Tequila Sour tastes like a sour cherry cocktail layered over the deeper flavor of the Reposado. The easiest part is you can use the juice from the jar of cherries for the drink. No need to create a special syrup for the cocktail or buy expensive bitters.

If you check the bottom of every Viva XXXII distinctive eye-catching tequila bottle, you will see an impression of the brand’s mascot, Phil the chihuahua. The symbol is there to remind customers 10% of net proceeds go to organizations that help rescue animals. Tequila with a heart. Love that.
