The dramatic part of these Halloween Skull Flammkuchen is the activated charcoal crust. The black color makes the perfect Halloween German pizza. Flammkuchen or “Flame Cakes “, also known as Tarte Flambée is super simple to throw together. There is no rise time in making the crust so you can throw these together in about 30 minutes.
When I lived full time in Germany, as Halloween is not celebrated there, parties were hard to come by. Mostly it was expats who threw together a celebration. Over the years, that changed significantly. More and more Germans started celebrating this fun holiday. Consequently, it became easier to find a fun Halloween part to partake in.
These Halloween Skull Flammkuchen are slathered with a delicious goat cheese sour cream mixture simply seasoned with salt and pepper. Mix in additional spices if you like.
If you are squeamish about baking with activated charcoal or if it is too hard to find, you can definitely leave it out. Alternatively, add some black paste food coloring to the flammkuchen dough. However, be aware it probably won’t produce as an intense black hue.
These “German Pizzas” are perfect to make with kids. However, the oven temperature is extremely high. Just make sure they only do the decorating and eating parts of creating this recipe. Obviously, not the baking part. I scattered mozzarella cheese over the top. Use cheddar or Swiss, whatever white-colored variety you prefer.
Alternative decorating Suggestions:
Use this basic recipe for Halloween Skull Flammkuchen to create other Halloween themed Flammkuchen styles. Alternatively, roll out the crust into plain ovals shapes. Then cut the olives to create spiders or to spell out words like BOO or HAPPY HALLOWEEN.
Halloween Skull Flammkuchen
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sour cream room temperature
- 6 oz goat cheese room temperature
- 1+1/2 tablespoons lemon juhttps://diaryofamadhausfrau.com/wp-admin/post-new.php#ice
- kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
- 3 +2/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup Charcoal powder
- 3/4 cup plus a few tablespoons water
- 10-12 large black pitted olives
- 1 cup shredded white cheese Swiss, Mozzarella, cheddar, etc
Instructions

Beat the sour cream and goat cheese together until combined and creamy. Beat in the lemon juice. Season with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper. Set aside.

In a separate mixing bowl whisk the flour, charcoal powder and salt together.

Add the water and use the dough hook attachment of your mixer to blend. If the mixture is too dry, add water, one tablespoon at a time, until a smooth dough forms.

Separate the dough into 4 equal pieces (use a kitchen scale)

Preheat the oven to 475 degrees F. Place 2 baking sheets in the oven.

On a lightly floured pieces of parchment paper, roll each piece of dough out into a skull shape. Start by rolling out an oval shape, then rolling the top portion larger than the bottom.

Spread the goat cheese/sour cream mixture out evenly over the four dough ovals.

Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly on top.

Cut 4 of the black olives in half from the shot end. Use these for eyes. Cut another 2 olives lengthwise. Use a sharp knife to trim these into triangles for the noses.

Cut the remaining olives in half lengthwise and cut them into small rectangles to create the teeth. I used 10 rectangles (5 upper and 5 lower) per skull.

Lift up the parchment paper and transfer the Flammkuchen on the parchment paper onto the preheated baking sheets in the oven.

Bake for 8-10 minutes until the crust is crispy. Remove from oven and serve warm.
