German Currywurst Casserole

German Currywurst Casserole is where Berlin’s Favorite Street Food Gets a Cozy Makeover. Ah, Currywurst — the sassy street food icon of Berlin! Born in the rubble of post-war Germany, Currywurst is proof that ketchup and curry powder can save the day. Legend has it that in 1949, Herta Heuwer got her hands on some British curry powder and decided to spice up a favorite wurst. The result? A culinary love affair that’s been making taste buds do the chicken dance ever since.

Fast forward to today, and we’re taking that classic snack off the street and straight into the casserole dish. This German Currywurst Casserole feeds four hungry bellies with a comforting mix of crispy potato wedges, juicy bratwurst, and a curry-infused tomato sauce that’ll have you singing “Ich liebe dich” to your dinner.

Paprike potato wedges

Potato Wedges Instead of Fries

Instead of the traditional french fries, I’m baking up paprika-spiced potato wedges. They’re crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Furthermore, they make the perfect bed for this German Currywurst Casserole.

Then, on top of those wedges goes a hearty sauce made from fresh tomatoes, onions, scallions, and garlic. Cozy them all up with a generous sprinkle of curry powder. Oh, and don’t forget the curry ketchup. It’s the soul of the sauce! Can’t find it? Don’t panic. I’ve got a link to a homemade recipe below. You’re welcome.

Next, enter the bratwurst. These plump, juicy sausages lie proudly on top of that saucy goodness. They are so ready to make your casserole dreams come true. This masterpiece gets a crowning layer of shredded Swiss cheese. Feeling fancy? Swap it for Gruyere or Emmentaler. Then it’s straight into the oven until bubbly, golden, and utterly irresistible.
