Who says a Linzer cookie has to be round or square? Not me. That’s for sure. So, I came up with this Oscar Night Linzer Cookies idea for last’s year’s Academy Awards evening. However, I ran out of time and wasn’t able to make them. Consequently, I am tickled to revisit the idea now and very happy with the result. They’ve arrived red carpet ready. All glittery, golden and more importantly, delicious.
Jump to RecipeThe cookie recipe is a traditional almond Linzer. I did not want to stray too far off a traditional recipe because the decoration is so over the top. These soft cookies sandwich a lovely jam surprise and melt in your mouth. I filled these Linzers with a strawberry jam because that’s what I had open in the refrigerator. However, use whatever flavor you like.
TIP: If the jam is not smooth, pulse it in a blender or food processor to even out the texture. It will spread more easily on the cookie.
Before I talk about the decorating, here’s the best part of this post – THE GIVEAWAY! These beautiful red carpet ready cookies deserved special equipment.

These pans are so pretty, you can serve the food right in them. No need to transfer to or dirty up a serving platter.
THE SET INCLUDES Two 9-Inch Round Cake Pans, 9-Inch x 5-Inch Loaf Pan, 9-Inch x 13-Inch Rectangular Cake Pan, 10-Inch x 15-Inch Cookie Pan.
I ordered a special Oscar-shaped cutter from Amazon to make these cookies. However, you can use a Halloween mummy cutter if you have one. A very small star-shaped cutter created the cutouts in the top cookie. Once the cutout cookies had cooled. I sprayed them with Wilton’s Gold Color Mist. It dries fast. Consequently, I almost immediately was able to brush them with gold disco dust.

I used the baking sheet from the set for these cookies. It worked like a dream. The cookies baked evenly and I was very happy with the result. Consequently, I’m looking forward to using the other pieces in the set.
Oscar Night Linzer Cookies
Ingredients
- 1+ 3/4 cups flour
- 1 cup almond flour*
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup red jam or jelly
Instructions
-
Whisk together the flours, baking powder and salt in a separate bowl and set aside.
-
In a mixer, cream the butter and sugar together, about 3 minutes.
-
Beat in the egg, then the vanilla.
-
Add the dry ingredients and beat until everything is just combined
-
Wrap the dough in plastic film and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
-
Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
-
Roll the dough out on a floured surface and cut out the cookies with an Oscar shaped cutter and place on a baking sheet.
-
Transfer the other half the cutouts to the parchment-lined baking sheet. use small star cutters, to cut star shapes in the Oscar cutout. Use a toothpick to remove the cutouts from the cutter.
-
NOTE: Place the cutout cookies and the solid ones on different baking sheets. They will have different baking times. The cutout ones will bake faster.
-
Once full, place the cookie sheets in the freezer for 10 minutes before transferring to the oven. This will prevent the cookies from spreading too much.
-
Bake the solid Oscar cookies for 8 minutes. Bake the Oscar cookies with the star cutouts for 6 minutes or until just slightly golden around the edges.
-
Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely.
-
Spread the solid cookie (the one without the cutouts) with a layer of jam or jelly.
-
Once the cutout Oscars have cooled, spray them with edible gold.
-
Dip the paintbrush in the alcohol, then into the dust and paint it on the cutout cookies.
-
Place the decorated cutout cookie on top of the jelly covered cookie.
-
Plate and serve but definitely hide a few for yourself.
Recipe Notes
*I buy almond flour. To make your own, pulverize blanched or unblanched almonds in a food processor. Add a few table spoons of powdered sugar to prevent the almonds from forming a paste.
