But before we delve into the delicious details, let’s explore the history of these iconic cookies and the significance of Purim. Hamantaschen, which translates to “Haman’s pockets” in Yiddish, is named after Haman. He is the villain of the Purim story. Purim is a joyous Jewish holiday commemorating the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from the wicked Haman’s plot to destroy them. The holiday is celebrated with festive gatherings. Celebrants read the Megillah (the Scroll of Esther), and give gifts to friends and the needy. Also, of course, indulge in delicious foods like hamantaschen.

The Folding:

Now, onto the special way of folding these cookies. Form these Hamantaschen by folding the edges of dough circles to create a triangular pocket. This symbolizes Haman’s three-cornered hat or his ears. Then, place a teaspoon of the date and preserved lemon filling in the center of each circle. Carefully pinch the edges of the dough together to form a triangle to enclose the filling within. As a result, this unique folding technique ensures that each hamantaschen is filled with deliciousness.
