Cinnamon Sugar Apple Rings in Beer Batter
Got beer? Got Apples? This German treat also works as a terrific brunch alternative to French toast, replacing the bread with battered, fried apples. You can pretend these Cinnamon Sugar Apple Rings are healthier.
Cinnamon Sugar Apple Rings

For the batter, Weiss beer or wheat beer works great in this recipe. A light herbal beer variety I believe works best for this recipe. You could try with a darker variety. However, the result may be too heavy tasting. However, by all means, experiment with a darker beer if that’s all you have on hand. Another alternative is to use a flavored brew. Here’s an idea: use one with apple flavor. There are so many possibilities out there now to choose from to experiment with.  Get creative.
apples
Almost any variety of apples works for this recipe. However,  make sure the apples are crisp. Because mushy apples would be harder to work with. Also, who likes a mushy apple? Really.

Other Versions for this recipe:

For extra oomph and sexiness (and calories) I recommend serving these Cinnamon Sugar Apple Rings with homemade whipped cream but that’s optional. An alternative to whipped cream would be to serve some plain or vanilla-flavored yogurt on the side. Or, use a lighter version of the cream.
Here’s another idea:  For the whipped cream. Add a splash of liqueur. For example,  add Calvados, Aamaretto, or Kirsch to the whipped cream.

You can switch up this recipe by swapping out the apples for pears. Match the flavor of the whipped cream by adding a splash of pear liqueur.

Is the cinnamon sugar in these Cinnamon Sugar Apple Rings is too boring for you? No problem. Switch out the cinnamon for other spices. For example,  ground cardamom, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger are great and flavorful alternatives.  Combine a few for even more flavor.
