A few years ago I made hot buttered rum for the first time and I was hooked. Because I cannot ever leave a good thing alone, I tweaked the recipe ever so slightly, adding one of my favorite flavors, ginger. Consequently, this Ginger Hot Buttered Rum is just the ticket for cold wintery nights.
This recipe only takes 15 minutes to throw together. Don’t let the long-ish ingredient list scare you off. Most of the elements are spices. The recipe yields between four and six servings depending upon how generous you pour the finished drink. However, since there is an entire stick of butter in the recipe, I suggest dividing it into six servings.
It is not in the recipe. However, I sprinkled a bit of ground ginger over the top of the drink for some added spiciness. To pretty it up, place a sliver of fresh cut ginger on the rim of the glass. Nielsen Massey’s Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract added a beautiful layer of flavor to this drink.
Additionally, Barrow’s Intense Ginger liqueur provided a delicious kick. I happened upon Barrow’s tasting room with friends at Industry City in Brooklyn. Furthermore, their tasting room serves a ton of gorgeous cocktails made with this creation. Additionally, They serve incredible gin flights. The liqueur’s intense flavor comes from the fact they use the peels of the ginger root to make it. It is incredibly good.
For a non-ginger version. Just leave out the ginger liqueur. Without it, the recipe still produces a beautiful warming winter cocktail.
