Oktoberfest in Munich opens tomorrow. Even though I have attended the fest 17 or 18 times (I lost count) and was in Munich a few weeks ago, I’m a bissen sad I will not be there tomorrow. I hope these Oktoberfest recipes will cheer me up and that you will enjoy them as well.
#FirstWorldProblems.
Dressing up in a dirndl, visiting my favorite tents (Kåfer, Marstall, and the Weinzelt) sharing delicious food with my girlfriends, celebrity spotting, singing, and dancing, soaking in the sites and aromas at the Wiesn is one of my favorite pastimes. I have many amazing, fun, crazy and delicious memories of those gorgeous golden fall days spent there.
However, this year, I will be there in spirit and, of course, in palate. Over the next weeks, I will post some new Octoberfest inspired recipes. Consequently, from appetizers to main dishes to dessert, I have all your Oktoberfest recipe needs covered.
To get you started, here are some of my best-loved Oktoberfest recipes.
Fried Obatzda Oktoberfest Appetizer
A visit to Bavaria is not complete without sampling Obatzda, a cheese spread made out of soft, ripe camembert, cream cheese, butter and seasoned with caraway seed and paprika. Just typing the word, “obatzda” makes my mouth water. Dip a big soft pretzel into this creamy goodness and you will be hooked from the getgo.
I took this classic German appetizer one step further and fried it. No pretzel or bread pairing necessary. You’re welcome.
Pretzel Coated Chicken Schnitzel
Traditional schnitzel gets the pretzel treatment, marrying Austrian and Bavarian flavors in one dish. Chicken pretzel schnitzel goes perfectly with Bavarian sauerkraut (recipe also below). The kraut recipe comes together quickly. Complete both recipes in under an hour.
RECIPE: PRETZEL COATED CHICKEN SCHNITZEL
The crust is so crunchy and flavorful, you may not ever use breadcrumbs again for future schnitzel making. Hot Bavarian mustard makes a perfect addition.
Stuffed Sweet Onions
Bavarian Sauerkraut
This recipe serves four as a side dish but if you use it to top wurst or hot dogs in buns, you can stretch it to eight.
Bavarian Apple Fritters
Rolled in simple cinnamon sugar, these popular German pastries contain chopped candied orange peel, dried currants, and raisins and are found at street festivals and holiday all year round in Germany.
Apple fritters or ApfelKrapfen are less sweet than their American counterparts. However, they are delicious.
These Oktoberfest recipes will get you started to throw your own Oktoberfest at home. Certainly, stay tuned for more in the coming weeks.
Prost!

great recipes. I will be doing a few of these at home, and I’m looking forward to more to use in our community Oktoberfest. I do all the cooking, and so far this year’s menu includes yagershcnitzel (of course with traditional Yaeger sauce) bratwurst, Bavarian suarkraut, spaetzle rorkohl, and German chocolate cake (even thought it’s really an American dish – have done Schwartzwalder kirschtorte for the last 6 years). Looking forward to more ideas from you this year. Thank you so much or your site.
Your menu sounds WUNDERBAR! Enjoy! Thanks for following this blog.
